A comparison of three image-object methods for the multiscale analysis of landscape structure

چکیده
Within the conceptual framework of Complex Systems, we discuss the importance and challenges in extracting and linking multiscale objects from high-resolution remote sensing imagery to improve the monitoring, modeling and management of complex landscapes. In particular, we emphasize that remote sensing data are a particular case of the modifiable areal unit problem (MAUP) and describe how image-objects provide a way to reduce this problem. We then hypothesize that multiscale analysis should be guided by the intrinsic scale of the dominant landscape objects composing a scene and describe three different multiscale image-processing techniques with the potential to achieve this. Each of these techniques, i.e., Fractal Net Evolution Approach (FNEA), Linear Scale-Space and Blob-Feature Detection (SS), and Multiscale Object-Specific Analysis (MOSA), facilitates the multiscale pattern analysis, exploration and hierarchical linking of image-objects based on methods that derive spatially explicit multiscale contextual information from a single resolution of remote sensing imagery. We then outline the weaknesses and strengths of each technique and provide strategies for their improvement. D 2003 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Persian Printed Document Analysis and Page Segmentation
This paper presents, a hybrid method, low-resolution and high-resolution, for Persian page segmentation. In the low-resolution page segmentation, a pyramidal image structure is constructed for multiscale analysis and segments document image to a set of regions. By high-resolution page segmentation, by connected components analysis, each region is segmented to homogeneous regions and identifyi...
متن کاملObject-oriented Image Analysis and Scale-space: Theory and Methods for Modeling and Evaluating Multiscale Landscape Structure
Landscapes are Complex Systems, which by their very nature necessitate a multiscale approach in their monitoring, modeling and management. To assess such broad extents, remote sensing technology is the primary provider of landscape sized data sets, and while tremendous progress has been made over the last thirty years in terms of improved resolution, data availability, and public awareness, the...
متن کامل1 Multiscale Object - Specific Analysis ( MOSA ) : An Integration of Ecological Theory , Remote Sensing , and Spatial Modelling
It is now widely recognized that landscapes are complex systems composed of multiscale hierarchically organized entities that interact within unique spatial and temporal scales. These interactions result in scale-dependent spatial patterns that visually change, depending upon their scale of observation. Remote sensing platforms represent the primary data source from which such landscape pattern...

This study is a contribution to assess the high resolution digital aerial imagery for semi-automatic analysis of tree species identification. To maximize the benefit of such data, the object-based classification was conducted in a mixed forest plantation. Two subsets of an UltraCam D image were geometrically corrected using aero-triangulation method. Some appropriate transformations were perfor...

Unlike the frame type images, back-projection of ground points onto the 2D image space is not a straightforward process for the linear pushbroom imagery. In this type of images, best scanline search problem complicates image processing using Collinearity equation from computational point of view in order to achieve reliable exterior orientation parameters. In recent years, new best scanline sea...
